Cornell Clayton, Director of the Thomas S. Foley Institute is joined by former WSU President Samuel H. Smith to talk about the mission of the Foley Institute and the effect it continues to have on the collegiate community.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Thomas S. Foley Institute at Washington State University. The foley Institute was established to honor speaker foley's more than 30 years of public service to both state and nation, and as the 57th speaker of the House of Representatives.

Clayton said the mission of the Foley Institute has three parts: To educate through civic engagement and crucial public policy issue, to engage students in public service as an honorable career through internships and encourage bipartisan research on particularly important public policy questions.

Additionally, the Foley Institute encourages speakers from across the United States to talk to the collegiate populace and the community about key issues, careers and pertinent public policy. The Foley featured U.S. senators, representatives of The House, former White House chiefs of staff and former secretaries of defense.

Smith said that the students are becoming more aware of their ability to improve and aid those around them. "You can't complain unless you are willing to do something about it." He said, "Go visit with some of these people, but do it long enough that you really learn."
